The branches grow in whorls radiating around the trunk with foliage held in dense clumps at the end of the branches. The bark is blackish-brown and peels in horizontal layers forming hoops around the trunk (hence the common name). This is a huge tree requiring a lot of space. It Is definitely a tree for large landscape situations and is an excellent silhouette tree.
