Description

Ulmus parvifolia

The bark of the Chinese Elm is a real stand out feature, as the tree sheds it in patches, creating the effect of a tapestry of varying browns and greys. Foliage is lush, shiny and green, and the tree is semi deciduous, turning golden in autumn, and keeping its leaves in warmer areas. It has also been noted by many Aussie gardeners in recent years that native birds enjoy the fruit of the Chinese Elm.

Acer palmatum, Sango-kaku, Coral Bark Maple

You simply can’t miss the Senkaki Maple with it’s distinctive coral-red bark, which contrasts with its bright green leaves in Spring and Summer. Autumn sees the foliage turn gold and eventually Winter leaves you with a beautiful bare sculpture of a tree with striking red bark. One of the beauty queens of all deciduous trees.

Forms a beautiful vase shaped tree. Grows Approximately H: 5 Meters W: 4 Meters

Cerastium tomentosum

The fine, silvery foliage of the Snow in Summer make it a wonderful contrasting plant for your garden, breaking up the solid green. • White flowers cover the plant in summer, hence the name Snow in Summer • Perfect for edging, as a groundcover, in rockeries or grown in pots • Particularly hardy, thriving in full sun and well drained soil

Plectranthus caninus

Dogbane is a perennial herb from the mint family, which grows to about 15cm high, 30cm when in flower. When crushed, leaves have a very strong aroma, however dogs and cats are said to be able to smell the aroma from intact leaves and be repelled from the plant. This herb is also know as "scaredy cat plant". This plant prefers full sun to part shade, but may need more shade in very hot areas. If there is too much shade the plant becomes "leggy" with less foliage. It's frost tender so it needs a warm protected position to protect it from frost and hot sun, it's not suited to open conditions. Water young plants regularly, and once established older plants will tolerate short dry periods. It flowers in spring and summer. And this plant is also recommended for use as an insect repellent.

Video: Chinese Elms as a beautiful, medium size feature tree for a tough spot

The Japanese Senkaki Maple is the only maple tree which provides beautiful vibrant colour all year round, with it’s bright coloured bark that really stands out in winter. This is why it is commonly known as Coral Bark Maple. The Senkaki Maple is a beautiful small tree and is one of the best examples of a Japanese maple, providing your garden with a lovely small feature tree as a centre piece. It grows approximately 4-5m wide and high. Light green foliage appears in spring then turns to classic autumn tones. As the leaves start to fall the stems of the trees turn to a “fire engine red” colour for winter. This superb tree makes a wonderful feature in any sheltered spot in the garden.
