Solanum melongena ‘Tsakoniki’
An attractive perennial shrub with colourful, striped, purple fruit that is very popular with southern Greek communities.Use in curries and stews. Also excellent baked as a sidedish or by itself. Marinade in olive oil and mixed herbs then slow bake or fry as a steak, Slice then rub with salt and garlic. Bake, then place in olive oil and serve as antipasto.
Harvest when fruit is in full and firm – usually after mid summer.
