Ulmus parvifolia

The bark of the Chinese Elm is a real stand out feature, as the tree sheds it in patches, creating the effect of a tapestry of varying browns and greys. Foliage is lush, shiny and green, and the tree is semi deciduous, turning golden in autumn, and keeping its leaves in warmer areas. It has also been noted by many Aussie gardeners in recent years that native birds enjoy the fruit of the Chinese Elm.

Buxus microphylla

Korean Box is a fantastic compact shrub with long but finer leaves than most buxus. It's foliage is a bright green long oval shape with gloss. It is one of the lowest growing buxus and so is ideal for box hedging, however it can tend to turn yellow in full sun, so it will prefer a part shade/filtered light position. Korean box is one of the slower growing varieties and is great in pots or as topiary's. This plant has a moderate growth rate that grows to approximately 50-60cm in height. Plant every 20cm - 5 per meter for an optimum hedge.

Gigantochloa atroviolacea

Java Black Bamboo or Tropical Black Bamboo, is a dense tropical clumping bamboo native to Java, Indonesia. This bamboo species prefers to grow in dry areas where the purplish black colour of its culms become stronger. Plant in full sun. Mature height 16m x 10m wide. 8"/20cm pot

Prunus cerasifera elvins

Tis called a plum! But a fruiting plum it is not! The Elvins Flowering Plum is a perfect little round deciduous tree with stunning autumn colours, come spring time pops of blossom unfurl into white flowers which magically change colour to coral pink. What a journey! The best option for a smaller garden as this tree may be little but mighty in personality. Loves full sun and moist well draining soil. Grows approximately H: 3 Meters W: 3 Meters 8"/20cm pot size.

Escallonia Iveyi

Escallonia Iveyi is a quick growing, evergreen plant with fragrant white flowers in summer. Ideal for hedges, borders or screening. It is particulary hardy and will cope with coastal conditions as well as a hot, dry location, but does not cope with humidity. Frost hardy and drought tolerant once established.  Plant 70cm apart for hedges and borders. 6" pot size, approximately 15-25cm in height.

Lavandula angustifolia

Munstead Lavender is a dwarf-rounded bush with aromatic grey-green foliage. It produces dense spikes of aromatic beautiful tiny purple to violet flowers during summer. These are lighter in colour than Hidcote Lavender, and the plant grows slightly larger. 8" pot size

Why buy the 8" Pot English Box (20cm pot) size?

Standing at roughly 30-40cm tall (depending on the time of year), these 8" pots of English Box (Buxus sempervirens) are very bushy and large plants, great for an instant semi-established hedge. This is the largest size English Box we regularly stock, before they become quite expensive. What you are paying for when you buy English Box in a 20cm pot is the time and care it took to get the plant to get up to that size. What makes English Box low maintenance is that it's actually slow growing. It only needs 1-2 trims a year to keep a neat formal shape. BUT the trade off is that if you start with small English Box plants, you might wait years to get a fully established box hedge or border. In reality it takes several growing seasons for English Box to reach an 8" pot size, and it's all that time and care you're paying for. When viewed this way, the price of large English Box plants is often worth it, especially if you want a great looking box hedge relatively quickly. View more info about growing English Box on our fact sheet.
Please note: During Winter, it is common for discolouration to occur on the foliage of English box. It is due to severe frosts, where our products are grown in the coldest parts of Victoria. They will sort themselves out in Spring, however if it does bother you, please treat with Dolomite Lime, and a slow release fertilizer a month later. Here's more info on why your English Box might be turning bronze when it's cold.
