Phoenix has large, green leaves that turn to a firey gold in autumn. The bark turns a greeny yellow colour with orange hints in summer and increases in colour density to a vivid orange with silver snake-like lines in winter. The colder the winter the brighter the bark and it is this feature that is the key to popularity in cultivation.
